How to Re-Liquify Crystallized Honey

Do you love honey but find it frustrating when you go to use some honey and find that it has become crystallized honey and no longer spreadable?  We have the perfect solution!

Honey is, next to Stevia, our favorite sweetener here at Healthy Homestead Living.  Not only does honey taste good, but it can be good for you too!  Honey is antibacterial, anti-fungal, and great for the immune system.  Have a sore throat?  Lemon tea with honey works wonders.  Coughing?  Try making your own Cough Syrup using honey…  (full recipe below).  Also, we love using honey as a sugar substitute in our jams and jellies, baked goods, and in our morning tea.

Sometimes, especially with raw, organic, local honey…the jar can quickly solidify into honey crystals rather than the desired pour-able delight we are wanting.  Watch the video below to learn how we recommend returning your honey to the perfect consistency with your dehydrator!

Note, some sites will recommend using boiling water.  We don’t recommend this as raw honey is sensitive to higher heat, risking destroying the beneficial enzymes we are trying to preserve.  Others will recommend the microwave.  NEVER microwave honey.  Microwaves change the molecular structure of the food inside and microwaving honey not only will destroy any and all beneficial enzymes but will also potentially make your honey toxic!

Setting your jars in a crockpot of water on low may be another possibility, but since we are trying to REMOVE excess moisture from the honey, we find the dehydrator to be the most effective method for the least amount of time and effort.  No clean up, no waste, no effort other than turn the machine on, put the crystallized honey in (lid removed), and take the smooth liquid honey out a couple hours later.  The gentle heat of the dehydrator ensures that your raw honey has all the nutritional benefits preserved.  Give it a try and Happy Homesteading!

We got this recipe from Wellness Mama and it's the best homemade cough syrup we've tried. Tastes great and very effective.
Ingredients
  • 1 quart filtered water
  • ¼ cup fresh grated ginger root
  • ¼ cup chamomile flowers
  • ¼ cup marshmallow root
  • 1 Tblsp cinnamon
  • ¼ cup fresh lemon juice
  • 1 cup raw organic honey

Instructions
  1. Pour water into a medium saucepan and add the dried herbs. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Simmer until the volume is reduced by about half. Pour through a cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer to remove the herbs, reserving 1 cup of the liquid.

  2. While the liquid is still warm (but not boiling), add the lemon juice and honey and stir well.

  3. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 months.

  4. Dosage: Give 1 tsp to children and 1 Tblsp to adults as needed for symptoms. Do not give to children under 12 months as this recipe contains honey.
